So sorry KG that I hadn't responded to your last post in January, I missed this somehow.
My paruresis started when I was around 20 (I am 67 now), I cannot recall any major incident which prompted this, I think I just had a problem one day and then started to feel nervous about whether I could go. Until about ten or twelve years ago, I had no idea that other people had this problem, and it was only when I visited a hypnotherapist that she found details on line. (The hypnotherapy didn't work - I saw three different therapists over a period of a few years, one was also an NLP practitioner). The only thing which has helped me is densensing with another female at a workshop, so I'm hoping to get a chance to do this again some time. My family do not know of my problem, except for my adult daughter - I had to tell her when I booked the workshop as she wanted to know why I was going away! She was very sympathetic, although found it difficult to understand. The main effect on my life relates to travelling, although I never arrange to go anywhere without thinking about fluid intake and whether 'good' toilets are available! It doesn't ruin my life, but it does restrict it, and cause a lot of anxiety. It's good to be able to chat with you on here. Hope to meet you both at some time, maybe if there is a women only workshop? Although I have to say that I found it much easier than I expected to talk about the problem with men at a workshop - we are all faced with the same problems. But I would only want to do the desensing with another female. Jane123
