Re the white bears
I did a paper in December at the Scottish BPS called Bashful Bladder and the three white bears
In this, as well as other comments I used the white bears (see the work of Daniel Wegner) to illustrate one point
The issues from Wegner’s model of ironic processes is that thought suppression and thought intrusion are linked into a repetitive cycle…hard to break out from
I extended this model to include the issue of secrecy and hyper accessibility
My view is that therapy from a competent therapist can help break out from this loop
For me one important factor is to break the loop of secrecy and be prepared to talk about paruresis. (Not a surprise to anyone lurking on the board who has heard me say this before.)
This is all linked for me to the acts of deception (an act of commission) and which sets up false beliefs. And of course secrecy (an act of omission) evades true beliefs.
To change behaviour we must as they say in the song from Oliver… review the situation
New perceptions means new beliefs and hence new behaviour
