How commonly is the root problem anxiety about others seeing the penis? I can't tell if this is it or not. And by the way, for those concerned about American toilets, I am American and can say that the saloon doors described are very very rare, and, in fact, I found urinals in the UK much more open than most in the US. I'll never forget the first time I walked into a pub toilet in England and was presented with a tile wall I was supposed to pee on.

Hi Colin,
In general, I think it is quite rare for that to be the problem. It can be the cause of it, ie, if you are worried about the size, but generally not the cause.
The above is going on the info and discussions that happened on the workshops.

Things seem to be getting worse. I was shocked to hear that there was a long line of urinals outside for all to see at a recent Hyde Park concert. This is surely not an acceptable way to treat men/young boys and most young women do not want to be forced to view the backs of men using urinals on their way to the female portocabins.
I think most people would not have an issue with this. Also it saves men having to queue for the toilets, saves them having to deal with the smell / filth of portaloos, and saves them making more of a mess inside for women to have deal with.
Also for young men/boys who become accustomed to using these urinals, peeing is no big issue.
In my experience, it is perfectly acceptable for males to use the cubicles/portaloos should they wish, but at the same time, I have found there are either many urinals to choose from (so you can choose a spot away from people), and I have also found the fact that you are in a field with 3000 (small festival) to 100000s of people (somewhere like Glasto), you feel pretty anonymous compared to say the office or your local.
My advice is to enjoy the festivals and when you first get there, walk around and check out all the toilets. Some will be more private than others and some will be busy at certain times of the day and quiet at others.
