why the secrecy?

Why is the IPA forum in the States so secret? as compared to this forum? I didn't even have to join here to post. At IPA, it states, you have to join to post, which is the norm on most forums, but when you go to simply read "Talk About It" it says, "You do not have the required permissions to read topics within this forum"...What gives with the founding site that "requires" registration, just to read? Anyone know why? I wonder how many sufferers have found that site, but discouraged in coming forward because of the forced registration, just to read...maybe, I'm not ready to register yet and reading about it from others would encourage me to do so. I just dont understand an organization that wants to help others with paruresis but, keeps their forum private. Please, help me understand that logic.

Possibly two reasons

1. to deter irresponsible postings: anyone who wants to take the piss so to speak would not be bothered to register.

2. to make it more difficult for spam postings

I know the IPA guys and they would not do it without good reason.

I have noticed this problem. They make it very difficult to even join, let alone read the posts. I have emailed the forum twice asking them why is say's I have been banned when I have never even been there before. I have not had one single reply.

Once I found this forum, it was like the complete opposite, easy to use and friendly people here to respond.

Walt...thanks for responding. It's good to hear it's not just a problem I have encountered.

One would think that if they WANT to help people, they WOULD be a more open community. Nowhere on their site, does it say, you MUST register to READ the forums. What's the point of having that place, if their going to be so restrictive about helping? Registering to post I totally understand, but just to read, is overkill. That, prevents help.

Anyone else have any input on why IPA is so restrictive?

Walt,
I have a theory as to why you didn't receive a reply to your 2 requests regarding access to the IPA forums.

They have a part-time office person with limited time.
If your email went to the IPA office, response would be pretty slow, possibly even overlooked.

If that's what happened, the solution is for their webmaster to setup a special "registration problems" email account that contacts the moderators.

As Derek and I can both testify, there are moderators watching things nearly 24/7. If they received notification of an issue like yours, it would be resolved quickly.

That site is as restrictive as my bladder in a busy public toilet haha. That was just a bit of my Paruresis humour there.

Hi Joe,
I am an Australian active member of the IPA and PAA, and actually help "moderate" the IPA board.
This was requested due to differences in "Time Zones" between where I live, and those in America and Europe.
It is during these wee small hours of the morning that spammers, inappropriate and offensive material (including pornographic), is often posted.
I would often spend time every night removing such material, which often came from Eastern European origin, and this has by and large been "cleaned up" in the last 12 months or so.
The only way to combat this was to make registration and participation more regimented, so as to stop these autobot postings.
This was implemented by the senior administrators of the board.
Hopefully the board is still "user friendly" to all genuine corresondants, which is obviously what it is intentioned to do.

Derek, Andrew...Again, you addressed "POSTING" to the IPA board.

My question directly asked about simply "READING" the board.

Can you answer that question? why do you have to register, just to read?

and since you mentioned "spammers"...thats a false argument.
this board does not reguire registering before reading. or posting.
and each post requires you to enter numbers, to prevent spamming.
and this board, i will assume, is in Europe...i dont see spam here.

About this board; you dont see any spam because I remove it. Granted we get very little; I'd say about one a month. I've no idea how it gets on.

The IPA board is a complete waste of time. It is not user friendly, and I am guessing you hardly have anyone use the board. The reason for that is probably due to the fact that no one can register. I have emailed the IPA board 3 times with no reply, I emailed due to not being able to read or register. And when you have a sensitive problem the last thing you want is a big sign in your face telling you that you have been banned from the site.

Greetings from an American who helped moderate the IPA board for a couple of years. I think that members feel a bit more comfortable participating (posting), knowing that their stories and experiences aren't accessible to the internet's search engines.

Registered members also have access to functions not available on an open forum design.

By entering “Inability to urinate in public” in Google I found the International Paruresis Association (IPA). On this most helpful website I found a reference to the excellent book “Shy Bladder Syndrome” by Steven Soiffer, et al. I was also able to register myself very easily by entering a user name, an email address and a password. This gave me full access to reading and posting on the IPA forum.

It also, thank goodness, directed me towards the UKPT which seems to me to provide potential relief from the hell from which I have been suffering for the past 66 years. To this end, I have booked myself on to the February beginners’ workshop in London.

I really cannot detect any undue secrecy in the IPA and I would advise Joe to register with that Association in order that he might gain substantial benefit from it.

I think we in the UK should be grateful that most of our stalls are enclosed by substantial lockable doors rather than by the tiny un-lockable doors which are prevalent in northern America. From personal experience, I know that it is almost impossible “to go” anywhere in American public 'washrooms'.
