You're message resonated with me and my experience. The first time I ever had difficulty urinating was when I was aged 11 and had had an operation for the removal of my appendix. Some time after I came round from the anaesthetic I went to the toilet and suddenly felt that I could not pass urine. I can remember vividly how frightening this was at the time. I spent an awful long time in the cubicle struggling to go and must eventually have managed it. This is all a long time ago I'm now in my 50s!
I have had similar experiences since. I had an operation about 15 years ago called a Patti Plat - to stop my right shoulder dislocating. When I came round from the anaesthetic I, again, found that I could not pee. Of course, by then I was a regular paruresis sufferer, so at least knew what it was all about. On that occasion I did not manage to pass urine for some 30 hours.
I was told by an anaesthetist that opiate based anaesthetic can cause difficulties with peeing.362
