Quite a story!!
I think things may have worked out better if you had checked out the bathroom early on, say an hour after take off, when you did NOT need to go. That would have taken away the surprise element i.e. where are they, what are they like, what does it feel like walking along the aisle etc etc. Hopefully you asked for an aisle seat, so you could get up and "stretch your legs" whenever you liked without feeling that your seat neighbour(s) would register you going.
Re alcohol being a diuretic; that really refers to beer, and even then it does not affect some people this way as much as others.
As for mixing vodka and valium: that is warned against by pharmacists: "avoid alcohol if taking valium". Also be aware that the effects of valium can last into the following day and be dangerous if driving etc.
I suspect the valium would have done the job on its own, especially if you use a cognitive toolkit as described above.
Alcohol is a depressant and reduces inhibition, hence why it is easier to go with alcohol on board. But to depend on it is a road not to be travelled.
To readers of this post: be aware that both valium and alcohol are addictive and so should only be used only occasionally.
You are right that your state of mind has a lot to do with it, which is why we focus so much this on our workshops.
Happy travelling
